Bringing your weatherboards back to life!

In this section is all about revitalising your tired old weatherboards. Here is a list of the items we use./:

- Some cleaning equipment.

- Scrubbing brush.

- General cleaning product.

- Bucket, rubber gloves and a set of goggles.

- Some scrapers and filling blades

- Some exteror grade filler

- Tapes and a stanley blade

- Some gap sealant and a gap gun

- Sandpaper, a brush and a paint pot

- A recommneded priming paint

Before we do the adhesion test on the surface to be painted. We must wash down in the area to be clean, free from dirt dust and other contaminants and allow the surface to dry.

And then simply cut an X into the surface carefully through the pain film. Don't cut too deep because you dont want to cut into the timber. Then apply the adhesive tape over the X and press down firmly.

Remove the tape sharply and check the surface. If the coating has been removed by the tape, the area will need to be sanded back or completely stripped to the bare surface.

Handy Tip: We recommend doing several random adhesion tests on different parts of the home.

Important. If you're painting an old home that could have been painted dating back over 30 years, We recommend conducting a led test, prior to doing any sanding. Please our painting specialists for the advice on the test.

If the adhesion test indicates that the surface is in a sound condition, we are to commence the preparation. The most important part of the job is the right  preparation.

Cleaning the Surface

We're now ready to wash down the surface, then we set about preparing any other areas that require further attention.

The use of rubber gloves is highly recommended when using sugar soap. Mix the sugar soap as directed by the manufacture, appropriate for the size of the soiled surfaces.

Apply the solution using a cloth or sponge to wash down the surface. For stubborn areas a scrubbing brush might be required for a more robust application.

Allow the solution to soak on the surface of the area for up to 5 minutes before rinsing it off thoroughly with clean water. You may chose to use some type of pressure washer for this task.

Make sure you allow the walls to thoroughly dry before proceeding. When the clean is complete, you're ready to start the serious stuff.

Removing Old Paint

All the loose and flakey paint needs to be removed. This can be done by scraping back or sanding. Area's that do have to be scraped back will need the sharp edges removed so they don't show through your new finish.

This is done by sanding back or feathering the edges as it's commonly known. Alternatively, you can fill these with the appropriate exterior filler, sand and then spot prime.

Check the ends of the boards and use a reputable gap filler as required. Because weatherboards are susceptible to movement, a flexible gap filler in these areas is best.

When painting weatherboards, you should always start at the top and work your way down.

Weatherboard Painting

Start by painting under the edge of the board, before moving onto the face. It's important to work horizontally and work on one or two boards across the full length of the board.

By working on only one or two boards at a time, you can maintain a wet edge as you work across the board. This will prevent overlap marks. Which is caused by stopping in the middle of the board and brushing back onto an already finished surface, creating a thicker film build.

When brushing into the previous stroke. Start approximately 10 to 15 centimeter's from the end of the previous stroke and proceed the brush paint out, working slightly back into the previous stroke, then laying off in one direction.

Important Paint Tips

TIPS:

  • It's an important to work in shady areas.

  • It's important not to work in direct sunlight.

  • Its important to not work on extremely hot days as this will make the paint application location more difficult and affect your finish.
